Johnson (1809?-1851), a free, Black barber in Natchez, Mississippi, and to his wife, mother-in-law, and descendants. The papers reflect the condition of cultured and educated free persons of color before and after the Civil War. Mignon, Francois. Papers, 1939-1970, 1992. 17,000 items (on 41 microfilm reels). Location: MSS.MF:M. Journalist, horticulturist, and curator of Cammie G. Henry's Melrose Plantation, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. Correspondence, journal, writings, and subject files describe and relate to thirty years spent by Mignon at Melrose, which also served as an artists and writers colony. Among his correspondents are African American artist Clementine Hunter and Louisiana writers Lyle Saxon and Harnett Kane. Many ideas expressed in the journal later appeared in 'Cane River Memo,' Mignon's column in the Natchitoches newspaper Enterprise. Largely composed of correspondence between members of the French family of Baton Rouge and extended family regarding Baton Rouge, family news, health, and genealogy. Legal documents include bills of sale for slaves, land documents, wills of the French and Clarke families. Personal financial records, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings of current events, especially pertaining to the opening of the state capital and Louisiana State University campus life in the early 1900s. Hunter, Edwin. Papers, 1956-2001 (bulk 1970-1980). 2.3 linear ft. Location: T:123-125, OS:H. Practiced law at Smith, Hunter, Risinger and Shuey in Shreveport, Louisiana. from 1940 to 1953; was U.S. Judge originally under President Eisenhower from 1954 to 1993; was Chief Judge, Western District of Louisiana from 1970 to 1976; and presided over federal appellate courts in New York, Texas, Georgia and South Carolina. Papers chronicle a portion of the legal career of Judge Edwin Ford Hunter, Jr. The first half of the collection contains files that include trial calendars for cases presented before Judge Hunter and copies of legal papers with related correspondence. The correspondence addresses issues discussed in the surrounding legal papers, with the principal parties of the correspondence being attorneys and the judge. The topics of the cases mentioned are general in nature and reflect the typical cases assigned to Judge Hunter. The second half of the collection contains information regarding the integration and desegregation of the public schools in Louisiana, specifically Bossier, Calcasieu, Jefferson Davis, and Rapides parishes. Topics broadly cover the school boards and racial issues for the above mentioned parishes, as well as papers for the Bi-Racial Committee of Calcasieu Parish. Items include copies of correspondence among the school boards, attorneys, and Judge Hunter; statistics of the percentage of African American students in schools; legal documents, such as orders, motions, and briefs; and newspaper clippings. Mugnier, George Francois, 1857-1938. Photographs and exhibit catalog, 1880-1961 (bulk 1880- 1910). 39 items, 1 volume. Location: U:104. Swiss-born photographer who moved to New Orleans in the 1860s. He worked as a watchmaker, engraver, commercial artist, and photographer. In the 1880s, he owned a photographic studio which produced stereographic cards and views of local subjects. Photographs in the collection primarily depict New Orleans buildings and monuments. A printed catalog (1961) of an exhibit of works by Mugnier at the Cabildo in New Orleans is included.
