Business owner, justice of the peace, and parish treasurer from Mandeville, St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. Primarily consists of business papers concerning the rent or lease of his property in New Orleans, his sawmill and lumber business, and his position as parish treasurer. Receipts, bills, and contracts are present as well as personal letters and printed materials. Some records are in French. Sawmill and lumber business owner in Mandeville, St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, Verret also served as mayor and justice of the peace for Mandeville and as St. Tammany Parish tax collector and treasurer. Many papers concern the rent or lease of Verret's properties in New Orleans, in addition to the financial records for his sawmill and lumber business. Diary of travels by horseback through northwest Louisiana, then by steamboat down the Red River to New Orleans. Wallace's diary then recounts his travel homeward by Mississippi River steamer, via Natchez and Vicksburg, Mississippi; Louisville, Kentucky; and Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio. Mortgage of slaves of William Webb, Sr. to William Porter, to whom Webb was indebted, and certification of the mortgage by the bureau of mortgages in New Orleans. The mortgage indicates that the slaves mortgaged were Effy, aged 30, Lucinda, aged 26, and Lucinda's two children, Mississippi and Janus, aged ten and six respectively. Diary and sketch book describing Wharton's journey from New Orleans to Boston (1853) and continuing after his return to New Orleans until December 1854.
