  • McNeill, George. Letters, 1861-1862. 2 items. Location: Misc:M. Confederate soldier from Tennessee stationed in New Orleans and in Orange County, Virginia. One letter (1861) describes social conditions in New Orleans. The other (1862) relates efforts made to secure consent from the Confederate Secretary of War for the assignment of McNeill and others to P. G. T. Beauregard's command.   • McPheeters, Gabriel P. Papers, 1827-1862, (1862). 23 items. Location: Misc:M. Lieutenant Colonel in the Louisiana Infantry during the Civil War. Correspondence to McPheeters relates news of friends, family, and the war. Letters from his brother report on war events from Virginia. Papers also include a memorial of John P.   • McVea-Neville Family Papers, 1830-1917. 0.1 linear ft. Location: 50:15. The McVea-Neville Family papers consist of personal correspondence, items related to family property, and financial records. Of note is a copy of a Confederate States army substitution affidavit, dated October 24, 1864. The property records include official state and parish documents and notarized copies of various property agreements between McVea-Neville family members. Of note are a court judgment document on a family property dispute, dated December 3, 1865, and a plat map of Neville property, dated March 18, 1864. The financial records include receipts, bills of sale, ledger pages, tax rolls, credit account statements. Other items of note include a congressional report booklet on abandoned property claims, dated December 20, 1889, an insurance policy document for Mrs. M.L. Neville, dated November 6, 1903, and a monthly grade report for Albert McVea from Silliman Collegiate Institute, dated January 30, 1889. Mss. 3284.
  • McVeigh, George W. Diary and Letter, 1863-1893 (bulk 1863-1864). 3 v., 1 letter. Location: V:62. Private in the U. S. Army Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 63rd regiment, Co. G. Diary, in two volumes, document the history of the 63rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Co. G, from May 1, 1863 until Dec. 31, 1864. Entries provide a daily account a soldier's life, the regiment’s march from Memphis through Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky, and engagements with Confederate troops. Recurring topics include military campaigns, weather, camp life, disease, and war news. Entries also relate to the confiscation of livestock, the availability of food, deserters on both sides, enemy infiltrators, war refugees and slaves. A letter (May 3, 1863) and a roster of the 63rd Ohio Regiment (1893) accompany the diary. Mss. 3871.

Letter to the Commissioner of Agriculture seeking employment for his niece indicating that her family's plantation in Mississippi, on the direct route of Grant's army, had been destroyed.   • Means, E. J. (Edward J.). Letter book, 1864-1888. 10 items; 1 vol. Location: H:3, Misc., OS:M. Commandant of the Confederate Naval Station, Marion Courthouse, South Carolina, in the Civil War. Official correspondence discusses the recapture Federal prisoners; requisitions of food, clothing, and medical supplies, including shoes and clothing for African Americans working in the Navy Yard;. Papers include family documents, correspondence, notes & writings, financial records, genealogy, and printed & graphic material. Most of the papers date from the late nineteenth century and were created or collected by Victorin Melancon, Jr. or his daughter Marguerite Marie Melancon (Landry) of Ascension Parish, Louisiana.   • Melancon, Victorin Jr. Papers, 1862-1866. 4 items. Location: MISC:M. Private in Company D of the 27th Regiment of Louisiana Volunteers. Include a certificate of discharge issued to Melancon at Camp Norwood near Vicksburg on September 10, 1862, and an amnesty oath issued in Ascension Parish on April 5, 1866.   • Merritt, John. Letters, 1861-1874 (bulk 1862-1865). 58 items. Location: W:24. Union soldier from Madison County, New York. He enlisted as a private (1862) in the 114th New York Volunteers and served in several Louisiana campaigns. Early correspondence (1862-1863) and two diary entries describe Merritt's voyage from Fortress Monroe, Virginia, to Ship Island, Mississippi. 1864 letters describe military activities and several months spent in a hospital. 1865 letters relates the loss of men in his Company.   • Meullion family. Papers, 1776-1906 (bulk 1776-1866). 0.2 linear ft., 1 microfilm reel. Location: U:230, OS:M, MSS.MF:M. Free African American family of St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. Louis Augustin Meullion and his son Jean Baptiste (whose mother was a slave) were slaveholders; the son owned a plantation on Bayou Teche. Collection includes slave bills of sale, land sales, and other financial records; manumission papers for Maria Juana and her son Baptiste Meuillon; and an amnesty oath taken in 1865 by Miss Belazaire Meuillon. Robert Davies Miller was a physician in Clinton, Miss. The papers consist primarily of microfilm copies of 110 family letters, postcards, receipts, obituaries, and other documents, as well as two autograph albums, created between 1853 and 1938. Milling of Collinsburg, Bossier Parish, Louisiana. Milling makes references to his health and that of others; the scarcity, poor quality, and high price of food; slavery; and the unbearableness of the infantry and the morale of the Confederate army.   • Milton, Horace P. Letters, 1863. 2 items. Location: MISC:M. Private, 47th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, and clerk in the Ordnance Office, Headquarters, Department of the Gulf, in New Orleans. Letter written from an encampment at the Metairie Ridge Race Course in New Orleans, (April 15, 1863) comments in detail on regimental personnel problems and describes the cemetery tombs and the surrounding area. A letter dated May 8, 1863, describes health and weather conditions in New Orleans, the presence of large numbers of "grey-backs," and local excitement at the news of Colonel Benjamin Henry Grierson's raid through Mississippi and the reception upon his arrival in New Orleans.
