Letter from Mrs. Frances C. Hyer is written to her daughter, Mrs. Emily J. Elliot of Massachusetts. Mrs. Hyer mentions business and politics, including reference to Governor Wells and two July Fourth celebrations, one of which featured a speech by General Nathaniel P. Banks (which she praises). Polish-born Louisiana politician, journalist, and newspaper publisher who served as mayor of Baton Rouge (1876-1882) and United States consul in Callao, Peru (1893-1897). Correspondence pertains to Jastremski's military service in the Civil War, his political career in Baton Rouge, and his term as U.S. Consul in Peru. The collection also contains copies of speeches made by Jastremski, photographs, and prints. Included are three scrapbooks containing clippings and articles about Jastremski's political career.   • Jefferson, Thomas. Petition and court orders, 1860-1861. In a legal petition to the Common Law and Chancery Court of the City of Memphis, Thomas Jefferson explains his history and "prays to be permitted to convey himself into slavery" to his chosen mistress, Camille White (1860). Two orders by the same court command the sheriff of Shelby County, Tenn., to collect $12.15 from Jefferson and White to pay fees and costs owed to the court (1861). All three documents are signed by Marcus J. Wright, clerk of the court and future Confederate brigadier general. Mss. 3968.

Experimental agriculturist and horticulturist and resident of Elgin Plantation, Adams County, Mississippi. Personal papers and diary of the Jenkins family. The diary records results of Jenkins' experiments at Elgin, plantation routine, financial transactions, travel, and social and literary activities. Purchases of slaves and health of slaves are noted. Jenkins' account book shows expenditures for the home, family, plantations, and slaves. Correspondence includes Civil War letters from Jenkins' son, a Confederate soldier. Military records relate to the organization, training, movement of the regiment from Maine to Louisiana, via Virginia and to his service under General Nathaniel P. Banks. Personal papers contain Jerrard's history of the 22nd Maine Infantry, which discusses mortality at Camp Banks in Baton Rouge, La., the regiment's role in suppressing African-American uprisings, and the siege of Port Hudson. Six detailed letters addressed to Anna Kellogg were written during her mother and sister’s Mississippi steamboat trip to New Orleans, Louisiana. Letters discuss the trip itself and ultimately their stay in New Orleans, including places they visited, people they met, and their impressions. 15 letters addressed to John B.
