  • Harper, Aaron Charter. Account, 1863. 1 vol. Location: Misc:H. Confederate sergeant in the 12th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. Account of Harper's military service, with descriptions of battles, the destruction of Union military supplies and the capture of Union soldiers, and the destruction of railroads by both Union and Confederate troops. Harper makes references to military encounters with General Grant and desertion in the Confederate army. He also comments of living conditions and disease among soldiers. Business papers of the law firm of Harris and Harris, a partnership of Confederate General Nathaniel Harrison Harris and his brother Captain James W. M. Harris. The firm operated from Vicksburg, Mississippi. Correspondence from the collection concerns railroad bonds, contracts and construction; land deeds and sales; taxes; insurance policies; ledgers; receipts; bills; cancelled checks; and bank settlements.

Harrison was from Tensas Parish, Louisiana and his parents were David Harrison and Mary Ann Brisco. He married Ella Nichols in 1891. The papers include a tintype of James P. Harrison, a typescript and handwritten copy of "The Uprising in Tensas Parish (1878)" written by Harrison, and a letter by Harrison on how labor shortages impact cotton prices. "The Uprising in Tensas Parish (1878)" tells the story of Harrison's involvement in a sheriff's posse in Waterproof, Louisiana. Mss. 5138.

Maria Jane Southgate was the wife of James Morrison Hawes, a brigadier general of cavalry with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Hawes recalls her childhood and marriage; her husband's army assignments in Washington, D.C., Utah, and Kansas before the Civil War; and her experiences following her husband and living in Kentucky, Mississippi, Arkansas, Shreveport, La., and Galveston, Tex. during the war.
