This affidavit, made in Vicksburg, Miss., by Joe Gibbs, relates the marking for government use of 200 bales of cotton owned by a Dr. Smith, his hiding some of the cotton in the woods at the end of the war, and the burning of his cotton gin the same night. The collection consists of two original 1863-1864 diaries of Josiah Goodwin, kept during his service in the Mississippi Marine Brigade aboard various U.S. Steamers along the river in Louisiana and Mississippi. In addition are research materials compiled by William C. Wiseley, PhD, in his study of the diaries. These include biographical information on Goodwin, photocopies of Goodwin's service record, photoprints of portraits and other Civil War images, and an annotated transcription of the diaries. Collection consists of photographic copies and a bound typescript of correspondence. Goree's Civil War letters are written from Longstreet's headquarters in Virginia and are addressed to friends and family members in Texas. A copy of a diary kept by Goree describes a journey from Appomattox Court House, Virginia, to Talladega, Alabama, in the company of James Longstreet, Longstreet's son Garland, and a African American servant. Others in the family included Lewis Valentin Foelekel and Dr. Jean Lauzin. Papers include financial records of Antonio Gras and Lewis Foelekel; a thesis of Dr. Jean Lauzin (Paris, 1832); and personal letters from friends of the Lauzin family who lived in France. Collection also includes Civil War letters from Francis F. Palms, a Confederate soldier, and others to Henrietta Lauzin. Some items in the collection are in French and Spanish. Diary includes brief entries on battles at Valverde (Tex.), and Fort Butler and Lafourche (La.). Grow notes troop movements from New Mexico to Louisiana, and describes events associated with the Red River and Lafourche Campaigns, including experiences as a prisoner and encounters between Confederates and Native-Americans.
