  • McVea-Neville Family Papers, 1830-1917. 0.1 linear ft. Location: 50:15. The McVea-Neville Family papers consist of personal correspondence, items related to family property, and financial records. Of note is a copy of a Confederate States army substitution affidavit, dated October 24, 1864. The property records include official state and parish documents and notarized copies of various property agreements between McVea-Neville family members. Of note are a court judgment document on a family property dispute, dated December 3, 1865, and a plat map of Neville property, dated March 18, 1864. The financial records include receipts, bills of sale, ledger pages, tax rolls, credit account statements. Other items of note include a congressional report booklet on abandoned property claims, dated December 20, 1889, an insurance policy document for Mrs. M.L. Neville, dated November 6, 1903, and a monthly grade report for Albert McVea from Silliman Collegiate Institute, dated January 30, 1889. Mss. 3284.
  • Means, Thomas. Account book, 1801-1804. 1 vol. Location: F:1. Operated and probably owned a general store in Fairfield County, South Carolina. Ledger kept by Means contains entries of debts and credits valued in British monetary units and payments of accounts made through bartering. Newspaper clippings of prose, poetry, and illustrations have been pasted onto the first six pages of the ledger. For further information, see online catalog. Mss. 73.
  • Meeker Sugar Refining Company. Records, 1911-1916. 2 volumes. Location: 53:13. The Meeker Sugar Refinery was located in Meeker, Louisiana, and began operating at the end of 1911. Built and formed by Chicago investors, the refinery was the central factory for Rapides and Avoyelles Parish sugar farmers. Unlike other sugar mills, it had the ability to process sugar cane into white sugar. The refinery closed in 1981. Meeker Sugar Refining Company records include a cash book and a journal. Entries include many transactions with the Chicago area office and area sugar farmers. Early entries also document construction of the company's buildings in 1911 and 1912, including the boarding house, laboratory, and office building. Mss. 4011.
  • Meeker, C. J. Letter, 1849 Jan. 26. 1 letter. Location: MISC:M. Operated C. J. Meeker & Co., commission merchants and agents for Philadelphia and Baltimore packets. Letter to Captain Alexander Jones from Meeker, writing from New Orleans. Meeker discusses errors in the accounts of B. Buck & Sons and the bark (shipping vessel) Elizabeth. In addition to his own signature, Meeker signed the letter for J. McPherson (most likely John McPherson). Mss. 5351.
  • Meeker, Williamson, and Patton. Correspondence, 1807-1808. 18 items. Location: C:18. Merchants of New Orleans. Correspondence concerning commodities from Amsterdam, Holland; letters of credit from Baltimore, Maryland, St. Louis, Missouri, New York, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and a letter from John Williamson from Havana, Cuba.   • Merrill, A. P. and Aylett Buckner. Papers, 1787-1870 (bulk 1830-1860). 0.5 linear ft., 1 volume. Location: U:228, M:19, OS:M. A. P. Merrill of Natchez, Mississippi, was a physician and the cashier of the Agricultural Bank. Aylett Buckner settled in Natchez around 1830, where he was an attorney, cotton factor, and director of the Commercial Bank of Natchez. Collection primarily consists of financial and legal papers of Merrill, Buckner, and Jane Dunbar Ferguson, a planter of Washington, Adams County, Mississippi.   • Metoyer Family Papers, 1900-1944. 219 items, 6 ms. Vols., 1 mf reel. Location: A:1, H:2, Mss.Mf:M. Vilfride Metoyer and John P. Conant of Melrose, and St. Clair and Nazy Metoyer of Derry, Louisiana. Creole farmers and proprietors of a general merchandise store and descendants of free people of color. Ledgers of St. Clair and Nazy list sales, expenses, and accounts with wholesale merchants. Record book of John Conant lists general expenses, annual earnings and possessions, and the birth, marriage, and death dates of many Natchitoches Parish residents. Family papers consist of letters from family in Germany and in the U.S. and from various friends pertaining to business conditions and social life in Louisiana and Texas. Business papers include correspondence, bills, receipts, and manuscript volumes. The Jewish community in the Feliciana Parishes is reflected in a group of record books of the Feliciana Lodge No. 239 of the International Order of B'nai B'rith. One photograph shows Miller Warehouse and Milling Co., Inc. display signs on a building. The signs advertise feeds. The other photograph shows an indoor fixture displaying a special brand of feeds called "horse-shoe feeds." Mss. 5362.

  • Mills, John. Letters, 1795, 1807. 2 items. Location: MISC:M. Planter and merchant of West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, founder of Bayou Sara, and a leader of the West Florida Rebellion. In letters to Gilbert Jackson of New York, John Mills refers to a slave insurrection and the indigo harvest (1795). He discusses the treatment of slaves, destruction of the cotton crop by the cut worm, and the considerable amount of commerce on the Mississippi River (May 19, 1807).
