  • Inman, B. R. (Benajah R.), b. 1820. Family Papers, 1808-1888. .2 linear ft. (68 items). Location: B:50. Planter of Wilkinson County, Mississippi. Inman inherited Smithland Plantation in 1863 from his aunt, Nancy Quine. Collection includes financial records; legal materials; correspondence; and miscellaneous and printed items. The financial and legal records document Smithfield Plantation and a dry goods store on it. Business letters to John Lee, a purchasing agent in New Orleans, deal with the price of cotton and other commodities. Slave bills of sale and labor contracts with sharecroppers are included. Most letters written to Joseph Holmes (1771-1863), shipbuilder and owner from Kingston, Mass., from New Orleans by either Isaiah Chase or Peter Hanson. Letters discuss financial transactions made through the New England Bank in Boston and ships used to transport the acquired commodities out of New Orleans. Correspondence relates to the involvement of the Heywood brothers and their associates in the oil industry in Louisiana. Papers also reflect Walter Scott Heywood's political activities and his service on the Jefferson Davis Parish Rationing Board, the Louisiana State Mineral Board, and the Mermentau Basin Association. His speeches and autobiography are also included. Bills and receipts for equipment and supplies used by the Jennings-Heywood Oil Syndicate and its related companies are present. Letters discuss the trip itself and ultimately their stay in New Orleans, including places they visited, people they met, and their impressions. 15 letters addressed to John B.
