My dear Frances,
Your letter of 16th received on Friday morning. I regret extremely to hear of your painful sufferings but trust ere this you are restored to your usual good health. I attributed your long silence to “My little Niece,” thinking she was occupying your time. It gives me much pleasure to hear of your continued happiness and may you ever, My dear Frances, enjoy the gentle kindness of your attached husband…
I hope you will soon be pleasantly placed in your new home and that Mr. Haralson's purchases of nurse, cook and waiter will prove all you desire in these different departments. I think you will understand “the manage” of an establishment remarkably well. Our summer has past very rapidly and with the exception of the influensa, our family have enjoyed their health. Your Uncle's and my own attack of this disease has been quite severe. For nearly three weeks I have been suffering from its effects. Mr. Minor's attack has been shorter but he had considerable fever. The rest of the family are well. Stephen and James spent a few weeks over at Pass Christian. I've heard frequently from John and Kate; the latter's health has much improved . The air of Newport has always a beneficial effect upon K--. Surget has been much admired. He talks now very distinctly. William Hally and Rebecca Wilkins are in New York. The latter has not entirely recovered her health. Rebecca will join Kate on their return to New York. She was under the care of Ms. Samuel P. Duncan when she wrote. I think R-- will enjoy her visit as all the Southerns are congregating as usual at the New York Hotel. Mary Linton and Eustace Surget were there. William is still devoted to Miss Mary but can not say that she smiles on him. Hallie is with his Grandma…In ten days I shall expect William and H at home and many of our “absentees” are expected about that time. The family from Somerset were enjoying themselves at the Silver Springs in the Virginia Mountains. They will return about the 5 or 10th of next month…Mr Eustis left a few days since with [?] and Richard for Boston. He places his sons at some celebrated school in Boston and then Mr. E— returns home. The family at Arlington are all well with the exception of “Bobby.” He has a slight attack of fever. It is said the beautiful Belle has entirely regained her health. Miss Maria Wilkins and Belle have spent the summer at the Beesheba (?) Springs in Tennessee. Judge Boyd has entirely recovered his health. He returns to the United States in October….
The Miss Buckners gave a pleasant party last week,which Louly enjoyed. Our neighborhood has been very dull this summer, so few remained at home….
