Gus Kinchen: Steve Franz, LSU Sports Information.

A lot of pride in that team, in that era. The people in Mississippi, when I went to seminary up there in '88 to '91, people up there still remembered my name even though I was never a starter, never a star, but I . . . They would know my name because I played at LSU. And the rivalry between LSU and Ole Miss was so great at that time. It was just a great era to be playing in, because there was a lot of focus on the two schools. And so it’s almost like I'm as well known in Mississippi as I am in Louisiana because of that particular point in time.

And Coach [Paul] Dietzel and Jim Corbett, the athletic director at the time, were the great promoters that made that possible. The coaching is one thing, but the notoriety we got from that was something else. I mean, you know, my picture was on the front of Life Magazine, had a Chinese coolie mask on. But there was a lot of excitement about LSU football at that time, and it had to do with the promotional mind of Dietzel and Corbett.
