Macro Express Tips

General | Workflows

General

  • Set the program preferences as suggested.

  • Make sure the program for which you are creating a macro is already open before you start in Macro Express. This will ensure that your program appears in the Select Program list.

  • Although capturing (recording) macros is the easiest method, your macros will contain every keystroke, mouse click or mouse movement that you make (including mistakes and time delays). This will "bloat" your macro. If you decide to capture a macro, you should use either the Direct Editor or Scripting Editor to "clean up" the macro.

  • When capturing macros, use function keys instead of mouse movements and clicks whenever possible. The mouse movements and clicks captured will be relative to the screen, window, or last position of the mouse cursor. If an of these positions change the next time you use the program, the macro might not work. It also makes it difficult to share macros.

  • When assigning Hotkeys, do not use keys that are pre-assigned by programs.

    KeysProgramFunction
ALT+numberWorkflowsKeyboard access to Next Step Buttons
ALT+C, ALT+E, ALT+F, ALT+H, ALT+PWorkflowsKeyboard access to the menus in Workflows and SmartPORT
CTRL+numberWorkflowsEntry of special characters and diacritics
CTRL+C, CTRL+X, CTRL+VWindowsWindows copy, cut, and paste functions
    CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+V, CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+W, CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+X, CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+Y, CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+ZMacro ExpressSystem macros
F1 - F12WorkflowsWorkflows functions which cannot be overriden

  • It is safer to assign Hotkeys rather than Shortkeys.

  • If you decide to assign Shortkeys, make sure the string of characters will not be typed as a word during use of the program.

  • Set your macros to "Play back in specific programs." This will eliminate the accidental activation of macros in other programs.

Workflows

  • Workflows appears as WF01000.EXE in the Select Programs list. It will not appear in the Installed Programs list.

  • Test your macros in the Unicorn training database first!

  • It would be a good idea to have only the training database open when creating and testing macros. Since macros are program specific, the macro might get "confused" about which instance of Workflows to use.

  • Macros will playback much faster than Workflows can respond. For the best results from macros which do more than type text strings, include the Wait Text Playback command after each text string, function key, special key, miscellaneous key, and command.
