Selection Considerations •  Model

Selection Considerations
  • Operating System
If you are used to using Windows on desktop, the Pocket PC's interface may be more familiar to you, however it takes more processing power to run than the Palm OS. This means that you must either get a faster processor (more money and use more battery) or response times are slower.

  • Software
Both Palm PDAs and Pocket PCs contain core programs (databases, document readers, etc.) , but the Palm PDA far outnumbers its counterpart with over 7,500 programs available. Pocket PC software is improving and its advantage is that the operating system is written by the same company that powers most desktops, but for more specialized applications such as a specific calculator, the Palm OS is the right choice.

  • Support
Consider who is going to help you with this item, learning how to use it, installing software, troubleshooting. If you are doing this on your own, then be sure to get something appropriate for the level of effort you are willing to put into it. Like all technology, it takes a while to figure out. (Are you able to change the time on your VCR or DVD player?) If you're thinking about buying a particular one, go to that company's website and see what their support looks like. Can you go into a user community, message board, etc on their site to find out from other users how to fix things? Does the site have FAQs, online customer service, email C.S., do you have to call in long-distance or even pay for support? Also, you may want to check the warranty period and policy.

  • Battery type and life
You have two choices: rechargeable (comes with a charger) or replaceable batteries (usually use AAA batteries). Though models with chargers may cost a little extra at purchase time, it may be the less expensive choice when you factor in the cost of batteries being about $30 per year.

  • Size/weight
An important consideration in making a choice of PDA is how much you are willing to carry around with you. Most PDAs are smaller and lighter than the smallest day planner. Currently the smallest on the market is the Palm V at 4 ounces and the largest is the Hewlett- Packard Jornada at 9 ounces.

  • Screen size
Screens range in size from small without much detail up to ten inches, however the norm for a handheld (Pocket PC, Palm, etc.) is 2.5 x 3 inches and for a Palmtop is 2.5 x 6 inches.

  • Color
People choosing to buy color screens find the clearer display and enhanced readability in low light environments to be key benefits. However, there are disadvantages to color screens to consider such as decreased battery life and added weight and size to the device

  • Memory
Pocket PCs generally provide more memory than their Palm OS counterparts (32MB vs. 8MB). Most vendors provide estimates of how many names, addresses, appointments and data you can store. Also, memory can be added to most PDAs through CompactFlash cards or Springboard modules.

  • Expandability and Accessories
Expansion slots allow you to add things like memory and accessories, and therefore increase the functionality of your device without having to replace it. Some PDAs allow you to send and receive email, while others have wireless modems for web browsing. All Pocket PCs include CF cards for memory and other options.

  • Data input
Typically, handheld computers use a stylus for data input, but Palm OS and Palm PC devices also have detachable keyboards which can be used for data entry, and normally cost between $50-$100. Moreover, if an integrated keyboard is a must for you, your choices are limited.

  • Hybrid
Do you want or need a unit that combines PDA, phone, pager?

  • Interface with PC
    USB or serial?

  • Model age
    Cutting edge, stable, or discount/discontinued?
