Performing Backup of Files

The Windows Backup Utility  |  Backup to a CD or G Drive  |  Backup Favorites

To make sure that the files on your local computer are safe from accidental deletion or hardware failure, you should perform regular backups.  Our files are normally on our C: drive (hard drive), often in the "My Documents" folder. You may also have some old email in local databases in C:\Lotus\Notes\Data. We can backup these files to floppy disks, CDs, tapes, or network drives like the G drive.

USING THE WINDOWS BACKUP UTILITY

Backup can be configured to make a copy of any directories you choose, and save them to any directory (including your G: drive). Backup will store a copy of your files on a regular basis, instead of relying on you to remember to make periodic backups.

BACKUP TO A CD OR G DRIVE

BACKUP TO CD

If your PC has a CD burner, an excellent way to backup your important files is to a CD. You may be able to fit a copy of all of your most important files to one CD.  If your PC does not have a CD burner, contact Tom in Systems so he can assist you with backing up your important files with a portable burner he can attach to your PC temporarily.

BACKUP TO THE G: DRIVE

We do not have very much space on the LAN servers until we migrate to the new one. This is a good option to remember for the future. Everyone with a valid account and username should have a G: drive, but just to be sure, go ahead and see if you have one.  If you do not, contact Brian

 [ Username$ on 'Lib-Middleton' (G:) ] .

An example is:

NOTE: Don't forget, your G drive is really some space on one of the servers -- it's not really on your PC. The neat thing about this is you can save your files to the G drive, we can image a new computer for you, and then we can retrieve the files from your G drive and place them on the new computer. You might wonder about backing up your G: drive contents to some other drive like the S: drive. Please do not copy contents from the G drive to the S drive. Both drives are network drives, and if one fails, they both fail. We back up our G and S drives, so in a worst case scenario, we should be able to recover our files once we get servers and PCs back in working order.

BACKUP INTERNET EXPLORER FAVORITES (BOOKMARKS)

You can save your IE favorites to your G: drive too. Open Internet Explorer. In the upper menu bar,

You can restore your favorites later by choosing Import Favorites instead of Export and by navigating to your G: drive.
