Password Protection 101  (Read This First!)

NOTE: If you have trouble remembering passwords, email your passwords to yourself and save the email. Do NOT leave your password out for everyone to see, and don't put it under your keyboard -- this is a well-known hiding place.

If you need help coming up with a secure password, try our Password Translator

Character Classes for Strong Password Functionality

LAN Account

To change your LAN account password, you must now use the PAWS Change Password link under the heading Personal Preferences on your PAWS page. Since the Libraries have joined the LSU domain, Library Systems no longer controls password changes.  Furthermore, LAN passwords and PAWS passwords are now synonymous.

Reset Passwords

Another new feature, courtesy of OCS, is available to PAWS users that allows you to reset forgotten passwords.   You will be asked to provide a carefully considered security question,  your answer to which will later allow you to reset your password without the assistance of the Help Desk.  Please set up your Security Question now, so that you may use this new service immediately.  At any rate, though, the Help Desk is available to reset passwords during its normally scheduled hours of M-Th 7a-10p and F 7a-7p at 578-DESK(3375).

For security reasons, the following policies are in effect Your new password must meet the following requirements:

1. Must be at least eight characters long.
2. Must contain at least one number.
3. Cannot contain your logon id.
4. Cannot be the same as your current password.

Sponsored Account Passwords

Supervisors manage Windows accounts for their students in the supervisor's PAWS account, under the Personal Preferences, then Password Management, then on the right frame select the sponsored LSUWIN account from the drop down list. Only the supervisor can set the password. It is a good idea to do this at least every time a student leaves your employment.
