Pickle first met
in 1963 Long as a member of the Eighty-eighth Club (in Congress); they became
good friends; Pickle talks about Long=s sense of humor; Long gained stature in
the House; Long=s support of integration might have
caused his defeat in Louisiana; Long wanted to try to bring the Democratic
Party towards the mainstream; Gillis Long well known in the circles of
Washington and Louisiana; Long enjoyed being involved in politics and ran
several times; Long worked for Howard Hughes and practiced as a lawyer and a
local official; very good at raising money; Long ran for student president when
he was attending Louisiana State University and won; after he won, his cousin
Russell Long called him to congratulate him; Pickle and Long made many trips
together and were close friends; Pickle considered Gillis Long to be
progressive for his time;
