An enthusiastic hunter and fisherman, Viosca was also involved with the local Boy Scouts of America, and participated in their camps. Not surprisingly, his scientific curiosity often accompanied these recreational activities. During one hike with a group of Scouts near Lake Pontchartrain in 1924 he observed a marsh fire which formed the basis of an article in Ecology, while at Camp Wilson he had a group of boys build a crude dam across Sandy Creek as an experiment on the effect the resultant pool would have on the native fish population.
