Saving Lear's Parrots

An Exhibition of Edward Lear's Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots

The LSU Libraries · Hill Memorial Library
August 1-September 30, 1996
Building hours: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday
9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday

Welcome back, students and faculty!
You are invited to view an exhibition of 37 brilliantly hand-colored lithographs of the most flamboyant and vivacious of bird families, the parrots. Dating from 1832, these remarkable works were created by artist Edward Lear when he was only nineteen years old. Although Lear is perhaps best known for his limericks and nonsense verse, he was an accomplished artist who published volumes of landscape lithographs as well as hundreds of prints of animals. Lear's Parrots are among the many treasures of ornithological art found in the LSU Libraries' E.A. McIlhenny Natural History Collection. They are displayed now in Baton Rouge for the first time.

The general public is warmly invited.
Sponsored by the LSU Libraries, this exhibition is part of a program designed to make the treasures of Special Collections more available to the general public. An informative brochure, with exhibition checklist, is available free of charge to exhibition visitors.

School children are especially welcome.
Elementary school teachers are invited to schedule class visits to view the exhibition. An activities workbook suitable for students in grades 4 and 5 and a teacher's guide will be available.

For information or to schedule a class visit, contact Elaine Smyth at 504/388-6547 or NOTEBS@LSUVM.SNCC.LSU.EDU
