Abell Family Papers, 1919-1931. 1 linear foot. Location: M:27. Papers belonging to the Abell family of the Winnsboro/Rayville area in northeast Louisiana. It consists primarily of correspondence between Evelyn Abell Norman, her brother—Edward C. Abell, III, and their mother—Annie Mamie Womble Abell during the early 1920s when Evelyn and Edward were attending Brenau College and Louisiana State University respectively. It also contains correspondence with other relatives and friends, two photographs, a camp training certificate, postcards, invitations to social gatherings, pay stubs/receipts, and clippings of accidents in the Rayville area. Albrizio, Conrad Alfred, 1894-1973. Papers, 1894-1973. 1.5 linear ft. Location: 64:4, T:14, OS:A. Artist who studied architecture at the Beaux Arts Institute, and later studied painting and drawing in New Orleans and Paris. He learned fresco painting and mural composition in Rome. In 1935 he joined the LSU Art Department. Collection includes personal and professional letters, slides, photographs, sketches, and printed items. Alleman, Al. Collection, 1921-1928. 179 items. Location: W:39. Resident of Baton Rouge. Collection consists of newspaper clippings and printed items pertaining to the construction and dedication of the new LSU campus in south Baton Rouge (1926); the Louisiana Constitutional Convention (1921); and Baton Rouge scenes. Allen-Smith-Talmage wager, 1935 November 16. 1 item. Location: Vault:1. One-dollar Silver Certificate, 1934 series, signed by O. K. Allen, J. M. Smith, and Eugene Talmage, as a wager on a football game between Georgia and LSU. For further information see manuscript card catalog. Mss. 3389.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Scrapbook, ca. 1972. 1 item. Location. OS:A. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was the first Greek-letter organization established by African American college women. Scrapbook contains a history of the Sorority, social events and activities, poetry, and brief biographical sketches on current members of the local chapter, Eta Kappa. Amato, Pasquale. Scrapbook and printed items, 1913-1929 (bulk 1913-1915). 1 vol., 26 items. Location: M:23. Native of Italy and operatic baritone. Amato performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York until 1921, and headed the Opera Department at LSU from 1934-1942. Appleton, H. Diary, 1875-1876. 1 ms. vol. Location: Misc.:A. H. Appleton was an LSU student and cadet. His diary describes the life of an LSU student. It discusses his classes and professors, as well as his social and personal life. Mss. 4804. For further information see online catalog.

Arndt discusses her decision to enter social work; her education and career before coming to LSU; the impact of World War II on day care for children; and the LSU School of Social Work faculty, students' curriculum and field experiences, and enrollment. Babin discusses his years as a cadet and student at LSU. Topics include hazing activities, interclass rivalries, demerits, drills, student leisure activities, dating, college courses, punishments for violating rules, professors, and school food. Native of Breaux Bridge and educated in St. Martinville. Also a veteran of WWI and graduate of LSU. Badon discusses early life and education in St.Martinville and his experiences as a cadet at LSU. Bennett, Harry Jackson, 1904-. Papers, 1942-1973, n.d. 3 linear ft. Location: 7:67-69. Professor of zoology at LSU and director of the LSU Marine Laboratory on Grand Isle. Professional papers consist of correspondence, proposals, reports, photographs, and other materials pertaining to the LSU Marine Laboratory; and materials pertaining to oyster bed surveys conducted by Bennett along the Louisiana Gulf Coast. Bertrand, Alvin Lee, 1918-, interviewee. Oral history interview, 1995. 5 sound cassettes (7.5 hours), Transcript (276 p.). Location: L:4700.0524. LSU alumnus and Boyd professor of Sociology/Rural Sociology. Bertrand discusses growing up in rural La. and the French language and Cajun culture. He also discusses rural sociology and La. agriculture. He describes the LSU campus in 1936 and details his long association with LSU and the Sociology Department. Includes copies, drafts, and typescripts of articles for publication; reports on rural industrialization, development, settlement, and social impact studies in Louisiana and the American South; and addresses and speeches given at sociology conferences in the United States and around the world. Blakeney, Thomas, interviewee. Oral history interview, 1992. 3 sound cassettes (2 hours), Transcript (70 p.). Location: L:4700.0181. Colonel in the United States Army and commandant of LSU ROTC cadet corps. Blakeney describes personal and educational background and involvement in LSU ROTC. He recounts his military assignments in the U.S., Europe, and Vietnam. He relates his views on ROTC at LSU and the effects of Vietnam War protests on the program. Boone, William C. Letters, 1916-1929. 10 items. Location: Misc:B. Homer, Louisiana, attorney and educator. Letters to Boone's wife pertain to family matters, discussions of his legal studies at LSU, and his work as special counsel in legal cases generated by the administration of Governor Huey Long. Boyd, David French, 1834-1899. Papers, 1833-1934 (1860-1899). 9 linear ft., 45 v. Location: D:14-21, vault, U:179, Mf:Mss:B, OS:B. Confederate soldier during the Civil War who was later appointed president of the Seminary of Learning at Alexandria, Louisiana.  He was elected president of LSU in 1884 and resigned in 1886. He spent his last years as a professor at LSU. Papers are comprised of correspondence, including correspondence with William T. Sherman; writings about Civil War figures and his Civil War diary; academic papers reflecting his life as an educator; photographs; financial papers; and printed items. Manuscript volumes consist of school notebooks; memoranda; diaries; morning reports from Kentucky Military Institute and Locust Dale Academy; and a minute book of the Demostherman Society. Resident of Tucson, Arizona, LSU alumnus, and sugar technologist in the Louisiana sugar industry. Bradsher, Earl Lockridge. Papers, 1899-1983. 3 linear ft. Location: 50. Poet, author, and professor of American literature at LSU. Papers consist of correspondence, including five letters and cards from writer and folklorist J. Frank Dobie; manuscripts of short stories, poems, and other writings; a few printed items; some personal financial records; class notes; and photographs. Brooks mentions his preparations for forthcoming Jefferson Lecture and other lectures, and his plans to visit Louisiana. He also comments on the use of the word 'reckon.' Burrell, Robert W., 1905-1966. Papers, 1931-1966. 55 folders. Location: 79:64-65. Entomologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine, and LSU professor. Manuscript writings, correspondence, annual reports, and notes dealing with research in Yokohama, Japan 1932-1941; Yakima, Washington, 1946-1953; and at LSU, 1953-1966. Bynum Family Papers, 1814-1969 (bulk: 1913-1969). 1 linear foot, 26 manuscript volumes. Location: E:103-105, OS:B. Prominent family of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Papers contain correspondence, writings, records, manuscript volumes, printed items and graphic materials. Early correspondence to Samuel Clark concerns family matters, land claims, requests for land surveys, and sale of cotton. The majority of 20th century correspondence written to Walter Bynum, Jr., reflects everyday life in Baton Rouge and Southwestern United States in the early 1900s. Correspondence of the 1940's reflects military life during WWII. Letters also discuss the return to civilian life with shortages of food, automobiles, goods, and housing. Manuscript volumes include Maggie Chamberlain's autograph book (1876), memoranda books (1898, 1901), school notebooks (1889-1920, n.d.), Phi Gamma Sigma Fraternity notebook. The majority of diaries appear to be those of Clara Adams Bynum (1906-1921) and reflect life in Baton Rouge and Louisiana during the early 20th century. Entries pertain to current events, weather, social affairs, family matters, Louisiana State University football, student life (1914), local and state government, flooding and work on the levees (1911-1912), and war news and anti-German sentiments (1915-1916). A scrapbook contains by-laws, rules and regulations for the Female Orphan Association of Baton Rouge, with a list of children received into the orphanage (1848-1861). LSU alumnae; member and officer of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Canaday, Nicholas. Papers,1960-1982 (bulk 1960). 31 items. Location: Misc:C. Professor of English at Louisiana State University and a citizen activist. Photocopies of newspaper clippings and letters about desegregation and the public schools in Baton Rouge and statements and speeches by Canaday as leader of the Citizens' Committee and the Organization for Public Education Now (OPEN). Carleton, Mark T. Papers, 1935-1995. 2 linear ft. Location: 50:21, OS:C. Born in Baton Rouge and served on the LSU faculty in the Department of History from 1964 until his death in 1995. His field was Louisiana history, particularly twentieth-century politics. Papers consist of printed items, correspondence, and typescripts which document the professional career of Carleton at LSU, and his involvement in the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana.  Photographs are from a family album. Campus correspondence reflects his efforts to gain tenure and his participation in campus committees. Other professional correspondence pertains to his publications. Carrigan, Jo Ann, 1933. Civil War collection, 1862-1968. .3 linear ft. (26 items, 1 ms. vol., 2 printed vols.). Location: UU:72, OS:C. Professor of history at LSU. Muster rolls, photographs, and publications pertaining largely to the state of New York's participation in the Civil War.  Included are postcards depicting Civil War scenes and photographs of maps of New Orleans during the War of 1812. There is also an autograph book containing the names, ranks, and addresses of soldiers in the 10th New York Artillery.  Artifacts include Civil War uniform buttons, commemorative ribbons, and a medal. Dean of students, director of student affairs, and professor of mathematics at LSU. Cole discusses dealings with LSU as a student, faculty member, and administrator. Two letters written by Jacobs while a student at LSU comment on General Sherman's visit to campus and on political and farming conditions in Richland Parish.  Three letters (1897) to his daughter Louise, in Louisville, reflect Jacobs' paternal interest. Kennedy, Kemble Sr. Scrapbook, 1925-1953. 1 item. Location: W:42. Kennedy was involved in a scandal at LSU resulting in his conviction on charges of criminal libel and circulating obscene material. He was pardoned by Gov. O.K. Allen in 1931, eventually reinstated at LSU, and graduated in 1933. Scrapbook primarily contains clippings from several different newspapers documenting Kennedy's high school graduation, various awards and honors from Farmerville High and LSU, his ordeal with the Whangdoodle scandal, and his obituary. Letter from Willaim Weeks Hall praises the job the military is doing during the war (presumably World War II) and the country's gratitude toward the soldiers. Roy, V. L. (Victor Leander), 1871-1968. Volumes, 1894-1913 (bulk 1894-1904). 7 vols. Location: H:12. Native of Mansura, Louisiana, an early graduate of LSU, and a Louisiana educator for nearly forty-six years. Roy was Louisiana's first agriculture agent.  He formed the Corn Club, a youth agriculture group which developed into the 4-H club. Collection consists of Roy's personal diary and notebooks. Entries in the diary are concerned primarily with his activities in New Orleans, and his attendance at Tulane Graduate School, Marksville Academy, and Southwestern Louisiana Institute. Soldier, president of Louisiana State Seminary of Learning, and Union general in the Civil War. David French Boyd was a Confederate colonel in the Civil War and he served as president of LSU during Reconstruction. Letters from Sherman to Boyd refer to voting fraud in Louisiana; African American civil rights and suffrage; activities of the Ku Klux Klan; the jetty system in New Orleans; LSU; higher education in Louisiana; and local and national political issues. Included is a letter by Sherman requesting courtesies for Boyd, a prisoner of war, penciled on the back of an intercepted order from General Johnston to General Pemberton.
