Biographical/Historical Note

Irby Coghill Nichols (1882-1952), born in Eudora, Mississippi, served on the Louisiana State University faculty from 1917 to 1948 as a Professor of Mathematics. He graduated from the University of Mississippi with a B.S. in 1906 and received a master's degree in history in 1908. He taught mathematics at the university from 1904 to 1908 at which time he met his future wife Pauline Wright. In 1908, he moved to College Station, Texas to teach math at Texas A&M University. The university gave him adequate leave to continue his education, and he received a master's degree in math from the University of Illinois in 1912 and a doctoral degree from the University of Michigan in 1917, studying under noted mathematician Louis C. Karpinski. In 1917, Louisiana State University offered him a position on the faculty, and he moved to Baton Rouge. Irby Nichols remained active in many organizations throughout his career including: First Methodist Church of Baton Rouge, Louisiana Academy of the Sciences; YMCA; and Phi Kappa Phi. In 1918, following an extensive correspondence, Irby Nichols and Pauline Wright wed.

Pauline Wright Nichols (1889-1973), born in Oxford, Mississippi, studied mathematics at the University of Mississippi, earning her degree in 1909, and taught at Oxford High School for one year. She then moved to New Orleans in 1911 to attend Sophie Newcomb College, where she received her bachelor's degree in design. She continued her art studies at Newcomb, under the tutelage of Ellsworth Woodward, and later at the Chicago Art Institute. The Art Association of New Orleans exhibited her work in 1913, 1915 and 1916. She taught art at Belhaven College and at Newcomb College until 1918, when she married Irby C. Nichols and moved to Baton Rouge. She continued her design and art work, creating personalized bookplates, painting, and designing stage sets.

Pauline and Irby Nichols had three children: Pauline (Jr.), Nina, and Irby (Jr.).

The Nichols family papers consist of correspondence, legal documents, financial papers, pedagogical material, journals, photographs, printed items and art work which document the lives and professions of Irby Nichols and Pauline Wright Nichols and reflect the family life of the Wright and Nichols families in the first half of the twentieth century. Early materials include: account ledgers kept by Irby Nichols and father A.D. Nichols (1880-1914); Mardi Gras ball invitations (1873-1929); correspondence between Pauline and Irby during their courtship (1914-1918); Wright and Nichols family correspondence (1892-1918); professional correspondence concerning teaching careers such as letters of recommendation (1900-1917); notebooks from art, math, rhetoric, philosophy and history classes (1904-1914); a journal kept by Pauline Wright (1909-14); journals kept by Irby Nichols (1915-1916); early drawings by Pauline Wright; and photographs of Irby Nichols and group photographs (1906-1923).
