Summary.       Microfilm reels contain the correspondence, journal, writings, and subject files of Francois Mignon, a journalist and curator of Melrose Plantation, a working cotton and pecan plantation in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Correspondence consists of letters to Mignon from friends who were life-long correspondents.  Many of these letters were separated from his journal. Mignon’s journal began with his arrival at Melrose in 1939 and continued until February 1970 when the plantation was sold.  Many ideas expressed in the journal appeared later in “Cane River Memo,” Mignon’s column in the Natchitoches newspaper, Enterprise, which dealt chiefly with Natchitoches, La., history and traditions. The collection also includes photographs, printed materials, newspaper clippings, and other materials collected by, written by, or relating to Mignon and his diverse interests.

Other persons significant in this collection include black folk artist Clementine Hunter; Cammie Henry, who bought the plantation in 1899; James Register; Louisiana naturalist Caroline Dormon; Louisiana filmmaker Caroline Ramsey; a black soldier named King Solomon; Eleanor Roosevelt; Rachel Field; Harnett Thomas Kane; Lyle Saxon; and Alexander Woollcott.
