Biographical/Historical Note

Mark Thomas Carleton (1935-1995) born in Baton Rouge served on the LSU faculty in the history department from 1964 until his death in 1995. He received his bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1957, served in the United States Marine Corps (1957-1960), and earned a master's degree (1964) and doctorate (1970) in history from Stanford University.

He returned to Baton Rouge to join the LSU history faculty first as an instructor and lecturer (1964-1968). In 1965, he received a promotion to assistant professor and in 1968, became an associate professor. Carleton served on the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana (1973-1978) and left LSU for one year 1976 to 1977 to be PAR director. He rejoined the LSU Department of History in 1978, and his area of specialization lay in twentieth-century Louisiana history, particularly political history.

Major publications included: Politics and Punishment: The History of the Louisiana State Penal System (1971); Readings in Louisiana Politics (co-editor, 1975); River Capital: An Illustrated History of Baton Rouge (1981); Louisiana Politics: Festival in a Labyrinth (1982); and Louisiana: A History (co-author, 1984). Carleton participated in a variety of university organizations and projects, notably the University Commission on the History of LSU and the establishment of the T. Harry Williams Center for Oral History.

Carleton married Maureen O'Hearn in 1963 with whom he had three sons: Roderick Lewis, Michael Owen and Mark Albert. Maureen and Mark Carleton divorced in 1982.

Scope and Content Note

The Carleton Papers (1935-1995) consists primarily of printed material, typescripts, and correspondence which document the professional, historical career of LSU faculty member Mark Thomas Carleton. Campus correspondence reflects Carleton's participation in University activities -- including the University Commission on the History of LSU and the establishment of T. Harry Williams Oral History Center -- and Carleton's efforts to gain tenure and research grants. Other correspondence, printed items and typescripts document his publishing activities in the field of Louisiana history and his involvement as a member and later director in the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana. Highlights of the collection include letters (1966-1970) from noted historian David M. Potter. Photographs from a scrapbook pertain to Carleton's personal life.
