Biographical/Historical Note

The Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park was the first and largest military park in the United States. The Park contains approximately 8,190 acres of land divided among several areas in Tennessee and Georgia. These lands were witness to battles between Union and Confederate forces in the autumn of 1863, when the hopes raised in the Confederacy following their victory at Chickamauga (Georgia, Sep 19-20) were darken by the victory of the Union at Chattanooga (Tennessee, Nov 23-25).

President Benjamin Harrison signed the bill for the establishment of the park on 19 August 1890; the park was officially dedicated on 19 – 20 September 1895. The main drive for creating the park was to restore the battlefields to the conditions that existed at the time of the engagements since they offered unparalleled opportunities for historical and professional military study of the operations of two great armies over all types of terrain.

The Federal Government purchased the land, restored the fields, constructed roads, built observation towers, erected monuments to the troops engaged in the battles, and prepared historical tablets for the various organizations of each army.

Twenty-six State commissions cooperated with the National Commission in the work of marking lines of battle and ascertaining other historical points of interest: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The Louisiana Commission (or Committee) created the images in the Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park (Ga. And Tenn.) Photographs Collection, after the Louisiana and National Commissioners established the official points of interest.
