Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985) is widely credited as the first surrealist photographer in the United States and is best known for his images of the American South. Fourteen scrapbooks and loose materials from the scrapbooks featuring Christmas cards, New Year cards, French advertisements, and images of animals, flowers, and children.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Clarence John Laughlin was born in 1905 in Lake Charles, La. He is widely credited as the first surrealist photographer in the United States and is best known for his images of the American South. Laughlin died on January 2, 1985, and is buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris, France.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Clarence John Laughlin Scrapbooks consist of fourteen scrapbooks of collages from the late Victorian era (ca. 1880). The collection also contains loose materials from the scrapbooks, primarily comprised of images clipped from advertisements. The collection includes collages of Christmas cards, New Year cards, French advertisements, and images of animals, flowers, and children.

This box contains loose images clipped from advertisements and greeting cards, including images of flowers, animals, children, and Christmas wreaths.

This box contains three folders, an 1894 photograph from Niagara Falls and loose images clipped from advertisements and greeting cards. The box also includes the contents of a scrapbook with the inscription “Sadie Holbrook, from, loving Aunt Sara, Christmas, 1881.” The scrapbook pages include collages of images clipped from advertisements, Christmas cards, New Year cards, and religious images.

This box contains loose scrapbook pages with collages of illustrated advertisements and business cards. The advertisements are for products such as French chocolates (le chocolat-Louit), Tansill’s Punch cigars, and Preston & Merrill’s yeast powder. The pages also include images of children and animals.

This box contains Scrapbooks 1, 2, and 3. Scrapbook 1 has a border of roses with three small pictures of girls on the cover. The scrapbook has cloth pages and contains collages of children’s nursery rhymes, poems, and images of people clipped from advertisements and magazines. Scrapbook 2 has a drawing of a blond girl with a gold-embossed border on the cover. The scrapbook dates from approximately 1887 and contains collages of advertisements, some religious images, and images of musical instruments, animals, and flowers. The scrapbook also contains Christmas cards. Scrapbook 3 has a red cover with the word “Scraps” printed and the year “1873” written on it. The scrapbook is composed primarily of collages of valentines, Christmas cards, and New Year cards.

This box contains Scrapbooks 4, 5, and 6. Scrapbook 4 has a red cover with gold and black designs and two pictures of children on it. The scrapbook contains collages of flowers,

animals, children (including some Punch and Judy images), and religious themes. Scrapbook 5 is black with the words “Scrap Book” printed on the cover. The scrapbook contains collages of valentines, Christmas cards, New Year cards, flowers, animals, landscapes, as well as images clipped from advertisements. Scrapbook 6 is spiral-bound and has a tan cover. The scrapbook contains primarily fashion illustrations, including images with Marie-Antoinette inspired fashions.

This box contains Scrapbook 7, which has a red cover with gold and black designs and the title in French “Album de Collections” on it. The scrapbook contains collages of French advertisements, including ads for Guérin-Boutron and Saintoin chocolates, as well as illustrated business cards from various stores in Paris, France. The album also contains cards from stores in Étampes and Lille, France.

This box contains Scrapbooks 8 and 9. Scrapbook 8 has a dark brown cover with gold leaf designs and drawings of two children on it. The scrapbook contains collages of Christmas cards, New Year cards, business cards, and advertisements. Scrapbook 9 has a black cover and contains collages of illustrated business cards, advertisements, Christmas cards, New Year cards, Easter cards, and various religious images.

This box contains Scrapbooks 10 and 11. Scrapbook 10 has a maroon cover with black and blue designs and the word “Cards” on it. The following inscription is on the inside front cover: “Herbert W. Nelson, from Kate, Christmas 1881.” The scrapbook contains collages of Christmas cards, Easter cards, and images of children and animals. Scrapbook 11 has a green cover with a black and gold floral border and the words “Scrap Book” on it. The scrapbook dates from approximately 1880 and contains collages of Christmas cards, Easter cards, fashion illustrations, images of animals (including birds, cats, dogs, and horses), flowers, and Asian-inspired motifs.

This box contains Scrapbooks 12, 13, and 14. Scrapbook 12 has a red cover with gold and black designs and the word “Album” on it. The scrapbook dates from approximately 1905 and contains collages primarily of Valentines, Easter cards, and images of flowers. Scrapbook 13 has a maroon cover with gold illustrations of plants and birds and the word “Album” in blue on it. The scrapbook contains collages of religious themes, Christmas cards, and images of flowers and animals. Scrapbook 14 is brown with a portrait of a woman on the cover. The scrapbook dates from approximately 1885 and contains collages of fashion illustrations, business cards, and advertisements (including images of sewing machines, crockery, and glassware). The scrapbook also contains Christmas cards, valentines, and images of children.
