Eugene Barksdale, born 1903 in Olive Branch, Louisiana, worked for Caldwell Brothers Construction Company as their concrete and carpenter supervisor from the early 1920s through 1938 during the construction of the “new” Louisiana State University campus south of downtown Baton Rouge. He then entered a partnership with the Leblanc Brothers & Company in 1939. In 1941, Barksdale, working with LeBlanc Brothers & Company, supervised construction of Camp Polk (later Fort Polk) located in west-central Louisiana near Leesville, Vernon Parish, and DeRidder, Beauregard Parish.
Following World War II, Barksdale returned to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he formed a building contractor business with William Hardee LeBlanc, Jr., one of the brothers from the LeBlanc & Brothers Company. Barksdale continued working as a building contractor from the late 1940s through his death in 1962.
These photographic images document the appearance of 25 structures on the LSU campus in 1938. Includes exterior views of student residential halls (4 different structures), fraternity houses (3 different structures), the football (2 images of the same structure, 1 interior and 1 exterior) and baseball stadia, field house, and gymnasium, John M. Parker Coliseum (2 images of the same structure, 1 interior and 1 exterior), administrative, classroom, and auxiliary buildings (9 different structures), Mike the Tiger’s cage (1 image), and the reflecting pool (1 image).
