Biographical/Historical Note

Gertrude Bott Saucier (1881-1978), a life-long resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was the daughter of John Phillip (or Johan Philipp) Bott (1845-1884) and Mary Buchel Bott (1851-1922) Both sets of her grandparents, Michael (or Michel) Buchel (1812-1865) and Margeretha Pfeifer Buchel (1821-1907), and John Jacob Bott (1814-1860) and Philippina Michel Bott (d. 1860) were of German descent. Gertrude Bott married Moore Duvernais Saucier (1880-1946), a native of Marksville, Louisiana, in l903. She was an Honorary President of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Scope and Content Note

The papers consist primarily of business, personal, and legal papers of the Buchel and Bott families, with a few items from the Saucier family. Included are lists of births, baptisms, and deaths, death notices, receipts for taxes, goods, school tuition and court costs, and a few account books. The legal papers include the loyalty oath of Michael Buchel (1862) and a true copy of the naturalization papers of Jacob Bott (1856).

The printed items include a copy of Constitution und Nebengesetze der deutschen Unterstutzungs-Gesellschaft von Baton Rouge, La., 1851 (the constitution and by-laws of the German Benevolent Society of Baton Rouge).

Thirty-one muster rolls of the Louisiana Volunteers of the Army of the Confederate States, covering 1862-1864, are present; the 2nd, 7th, 8th, 10th, and 15th Regiments and the 3rd Battalion are represented.

The photographs consist primarily of studio portraits of individuals, most unidentified, a fair number of which were taken at the Lytle studios in Baton Rouge. Various other New Orleans and a few out-of-state studios are also represented. An interior view of St. James Episcopal Church of Baton Rouge is included. Some of the snapshots were taken in New Orleans, Fort Livingston, and Dallas and Marshall, Texas. Views of several houses, probably in Baton Rouge, and a large photo of members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, taken at a banquet during the 54th annual convention in Miami, Florida, are also present.
