A landowner and attorney of Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, La., Henry L. Garland served in the Louisiana Legislature, as well as holding other public offices. Born to Rice Garland and Celeste Lastrapes Sept. 27, 1826, he married Julia Bullard of St. Landry Parish Oct. 28, 1852.
Papers of Henry L. Garland consist of correspondence, land documents, and legal and business papers relative to Garland's legal practice and land purchases. Other papers pertain to the settlement of various estates, court cases, and to business accounts which Garland administered. Also included are letters of Confederate civilians (1861-1863, undated); papers concerning the support and administration of free public schools in St. Landry Parish (1863-1864, 1894); and records related to the Southern Pacific Railroad, Morgan's Louisiana and Texas Railroad, and the New Orleans, Opelousas and Great Western Railroad (1852-1853, 1885-1887).
