BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE
This collection is made up of items collected and donated by Michael D. Wynne.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
Collection consists of papers related to the Dayries, Provosty and Labatut families of Pointe Coupee Parish, La.; Albert Diettel, a New Orleans architect; Civil War military records and Confederate currency; photographs of William Howell Wynne; political campaign material for the state elections of 1971; and memorabilia of the Catholic Bishoprics of Baton Rouge and Lafayette, La. Photographs of William Howell Wynne (1902-1905) depict scenes of New Orleans, Mardi Gras, Lafayette, La., and University of Southwestern Louisiana. Political campaigns collection related to various state elections. Civil War military records consist of requisitions (1861), muster roll for the 38th Massachusetts Volunteers (1863), receipts of the 8th U. S. Colored Infantry, regimental guard report of the Louisiana 13th Infantry Regiment (Sept. 29, 1861), and authorization for the confiscation of property [photocopy] claimed by William Pritchard (Aug. 13, 1863).
Among the noted authors of collected letters are Henry Watkins Allen (May 14, 1862), Theodore Roosevelt regarding attributes he considers important (Feb. 8, 1906), J. Edgar Hoover (Aug. 5, 1954) and Major General Weaver to Troy Middleton reminiscing about World War II. B. Provosty Family Papers - Court documents related to the estates and
succession of Michel Auguste Provosty and his son, Auguste Provosty,
comprise the majority of these papers. Earliest papers are photocopies of
originals (1826-1838). Other items include travel documents (in French) for
Michel Auguste (1826), inventories goods and property, including a slave list,
of Michel Auguste Provosty (April 24, 1827) and Auguste Provosty (Dec. 12,
1868, Nov. 28, 1891), distribution of assets (April 22, 1876), and a
photograph (copy print) of Eliska Labry Provosty (n.d.). There are also the
class grades (1867-1869) and store accounts (1865-1867) of Olivier and his
brother, Raphael, while attending Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.
(photographic negatives), and letters (photographic negatives) regarding a
silver medal awarded to Zenon LeDoux by George Town College,
Washington, D.C. in 1839 and returned to Georgetown University (1953) by a
decendent.
C. Labatut Family Papers and Photographs - Printed material and photographs
pertaining to the descendents of General Jean Baptiste Labatut and to the
Labatut House located near New Roads in Pointe Coupee Parish, La. Printed
materials, primarily photocopies, contain the histories of the Labatut family,
Labatut House, and the Louisiana Milita organized under Governor Claiborne.
Photographs (1973, 1976) show the interior and exterior of Labatut House,
family members, and and include copy prints of unidentified 18th century
portraits found in the Labatut House.
D. Albert Diettel Papers - Bernard Albert Diettel, a German immigrant, became
one of New Orleans' most distinguished architects of the 19th century. Papers
are primarily those of Bernard Albert Diettel and his son, Hans Arthur Diettel.
They include photographs, illustrations, and photocopies of articles related to
the buildings Bernard Albert Diettel designed in New Orleans and
surrounding areas. Papers also contain a chronological family history with
some entries in German (ca. 1900); a history of St. John the Baptist Church in
New Orleans (n.d.); a textile copy of a German monetary note; a photocopy of
a published article on the architect, Henry Howard, with a list of buildings he
designed in New Orleans; and the school reports of Hans Arthur Diettel. Other
items include papers and photographs of Hans Arthur's son, Aldophe Albert
Diettel, documenting his military service at Camp Beauregard, La., during
World War I.
