BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

A native of Amite City, Tangipahoa Parish, La., Henry S. Weigel was an officer in the infantry corps of the U.S. Army during World War II.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Correspondence between Henry Weigel, an officer in the U.S. Army in World War II, and his wife, Merle Elizabeth Morrison Weigel, a resident of Amite City, La. Henry Weigel's letters describe the basic military training he received in Indiantown Gap, Pa.; wartime service in England, including conditions in military camps, relations with British military personnel and civilians, and travel throughout England; the progress of the war in Europe and Africa; and the Allied invasion of France in 1944. Merle Weigel's letters are largely concerned with civilian life in Amite City, rationing, wartime civilian service activities, social life, and the rearing of the Weigels' two children. The collection also includes a scattering of letters from other family members serving in the military during World War II and letters from the Weigels' sons to their father.
