Leon Jastremski, a Polish-born Louisiana politician, journalist, and newspaper publisher, served as mayor of Baton Rouge from 1876-1882. He was chairman of the state central committee of the Democratic Party in 1884, United States Consul in Callao, Peru from 1893-1897, and an unsuccessful candidate for governor of Louisiana in 1903-1904, and in 1907.
Correspondence (1836-1947) pertains to Jastremski's military service in the Civil War, his political career in Baton Rouge, and his term as U.S. Consul in Peru. Civil War letters describe camp life in Virginia, the Peninsula Campaign of 1862, and his experience as a prisoner-of-war at Fort Delaware, Delaware; Morris Island, South Carolina; and Fort Pulaski, Georgia (1861-1865). Other letters pertain to U.S. policy in Latin America and trade with South America (1894-1898), elections (1894-1924), and the Louisiana Sugar Experiment Station (1899-1900). Political papers include copies of speeches made by Jastremski (1904), minutes of the State Board of Agriculture and Immigration (1900), and a petition (undated).
Photographs and prints document his life and career, and include a photograph of Jastremski at the Old Railroad Commission Office (undated). Other papers include a biography of Jastremski (undated), a map of Louisiana (1896), newspaper fragments and clippings (1837-1954), and 3 scrapbooks containing clippings and articles about Jastremski's political career, illness and death, about Louisiana personalities, cities and social events, and about European and American writers and celebrities. A fourth scrapbook compiled by Sallie Land Ashton Jastremski contains literary works from newspapers, obituaries, and other references to the Jastremski family.
