Joseph Theriot and family resided in St. James Parish, Louisiana.
Papers include state and peddler's (U.S.) tax receipts and legal bills, including a list of damages requested in the case of Arthur Theriot v. Widow and Heirs of the late Edgar [Drunthis]; federal tax receipts of Joseph Theriot; bill of legal fees in Joseph Theriot v. Arthur Theriot; parish tax receipts of Mrs. Emerant Theriot and Joseph Theriot; financial information concerning Arthur Theriot’s bills; notice of unpaid state and parish taxes of Mrs. Joseph Theriot (1873), Mr. Joseph Theriot (1876); bills (in French); and bills for pharmaceuticals (1866-1926). Also included are handwritten prayers, poems, holy cards, and leaflets (some of which are in French); and pictures of religious subjects.
The photograph collection consists almost solely of portraits of various individuals, some of whom are identified. Photographers identified by their imprint are: L. Robira, W. W. Washburn, Simon, E. Maurice, Schleier, Blanchard, J. Frazier, Peyton's, H. Maignan, Daliet, F. J. Barnes, Lilienthal, A. D. Lytle, A. Roth, C. E. Schrenk, M. Y. Moore, and Adams and Simon. Some of the portraits are tintypes and postcards; most of the photographs are undated.
