BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE
The Meyer brothers were German immigrants who owned a general merchandise store in the town of Clinton, in East Feliciana Parish.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
Family papers, 1855-1870, consist of letters in German and Yiddish from family members in Germany to Emanuel Meyer, Heinrich (sometimes Henry) Meyer, and Caroline Meyer. Other personal letters, 1860-1870, consist of letters in English and German from family members in the U. S. and from various friends pertaining to business conditions and social life in Louisiana and in Galveston, Texas. The Jewish community in the Feliciana Parishes is reflected in a group of record books, 1877-1902, of the Feliciana Lodge No. 239 of the International Order of B’nai B’rith.
Business papers include correspondence, bills, receipts, and other items, 1866-1899. Manuscript volumes, 1866-1909, include ledgers, invoice books, letter books, journals, account books, cash books, cotton record books, and daybooks.
