Items include historical materials on St. James Parish, a print of the Convent of Sacred Heart (1974), some U.S. currency (1860-1874), and a number of printed items and manuscript volumes. Some financial and legal papers concern his father-in-law, Nelson Paul Himel.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

John Devince Lambremont was born in Convent, La., in 1892. His father, Paul M. Lambremont, was a State Senator and Lieutenant Governor (1908-1912) of Louisiana. John Lambremont completed high school at Jefferson College and married Odette Himel in 1917, daughter of Nelson Paul Himel and a graduate of the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Convent. After receiving degrees from Loyola University New Orleans and Louisiana State University, Lambremont taught at Jefferson College, White Hall School in Union, La., and Romeville High School in Convent, and served as principal of St. James High School and Gramercy Elementary School. In 1947, he was appointed Assistant Supervisor of High Schools for the State of Louisiana. After his retirement in 1957, Lambremont remained active in the community until his death in 1978.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Early papers include the Baptismal certificate of Paul Nelson Himel (1852), a license certifying that Nelson Himel is an authorized sugar producer (1891), legal documents pertaining to land sales in St. James Parish, La. (1841-1909) including that of Wilton Plantation (1907), and the succession of Nelson Paul Himel (1917). Papers also include stock certificates (1911-1938), a land plat of Poché Brothers Plantation (1921), another of land near Uncle Sam Plantation (undated), and historical material relating to the history of St. James Parish, St. Michael Catholic Church in Convent, La., and St. Mary Chapel, Union, La. (1928-1974). Also included is a certificate accepting Louis S. Webre into the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Jefferson College (1877). Correspondence includes two letters from Warren Dicharry, in which he describes teaching at a Catholic Mission in China (1948, 1949).

Printed materials include leather postcards (undated), First Communion cards (1908), an advertising pamphlet (1918), a pamphlet titled “This Week in New Orleans” (June 19, 1948), a pamphlet regarding Louisiana citrus (1958), a New Orleans Mardi Gras Souvenir Program (1948), and the “Citizen’s Guide to the 1960 Louisiana Legislature (1960). Other printed items include U.S. currency (1860-1874), a copy of The Story of Louisiana, a B.A. dissertation by John Lambremont, submitted to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Loyola University (undated), a biographical sketch of John D. Lambremont (Nov. 12, 1978), and a print of Le Couvent du Sacré Coeur (1974). Among the photographs are copyprints of P. M. Lambremont, St. Michael Church, Sacred Heart Convent, Convent, La., Uncle Sam Plantation house, Jefferson College, Convent, La (1910, undated), and a photograph on glass of Nelson P. Himel (1875).

Manuscript volumes consist of a (nearly empty) record book (1883-1884), a daybook pertaining to school events (1947), and an account ledger (1917-1920). A bible presented to Lieutenant Governor P.M. Lambremont in 1908 by Louisiana Chief Justice Joseph A. Breaux also contains various family birth and death dates (1899). Other volumes include E. Himel Sacré Coeur Convent Notebook (1905, undated) which contains essays and studies on religion and other topics such as genealogical information about the Himel, Poché, and Cantrelle families (in French); as well as Mrs. John D. Lambremont Scrapbooks (1872-1971) which contain material relative to St. James Parish, including photographs, newspaper clippings, invitations, correspondence, and printed items pertaining to the Catholic Church, social life, obituaries of St. James Parish residents, Jefferson College (Manresa House Catholic retreat facility), historic buildings, perique tobacco culture, and other subjects of local interest. The school notebook and scrapbooks are only available on microfilm.
