BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

The son of Elodie Barrière and E. Howard McCaleb was born in New Orleans in 1897. A third generation lawyer, he graduated from Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1919 and was admitted to the bar in 1920. He practiced in his father's law firm (1920-1924), was assistant United States attorney for the eastern district for seven months in 1925, and served as judge of the Court of Appeals for Orleans Parish (1936-1941). McCaleb served on the Louisiana Supreme Court as a temporary member (1941-1943), associate justice (1947-1970), and chief justice (1971-1972). He died in New Orleans on October 30, 1978.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection documents McCaleb’s legal career and contains general correspondence, court business, correspondence pertaining to the Louisiana State Bar, legal conferences, advisory committees, various cases and legal studies, moot court sessions and writs. Also included are invitations accepted and declined, legislative bills, information on law clerks and judges and photographs. McCaleb’s speeches as well as documents pertaining to the Tulane Law School and the Tulane Law Review are also found.
