The de la Vergne family was a family of lawyers, planters, and businessmen of New Orleans, La.
Papers pertain mainly to activities of family members in Louisiana from 1719 and to banking and finance in New Orleans, particularly to the Consolidated Association of the Planters of Louisiana. Correspondence and military orders, 1814-1815, pertain to the defense of New Orleans during the War of 1812. Correspondence and other papers, 1835-1839, pertain to Jefferson College, St. James Parish. Letters of Jules Lavergne, 1841-1842, discuss political figures in Washington, D.C., congressional legislation, and presidential policy, especially on fiscal matters and tariffs. The collection also includes genealogical materials, pertaining to the de la Vergne, Bermudez, Dreux, Landry de Freneuse, Schmidt, Seghers, and Villere families.
Printed volumes consist of a copy of the Digest of Civil Laws now in Force in the Territory of Orleans (1808); The de la Vergne Volume (Baton Rouge, 1971) [see LLMVC KFL30 1808 .A22] and Lavoisne, Atlas, Being a General Guide to History. . .(Philadelphia, 1820) [on microfilm].
Originals are in the Tulane University Department of Archives and in the possession of the de la Vergne family.
