HISTORICAL NOTE
The Louisiana Music Teachers Association (LMTA) was established in 1952 at a meeting of music educators in Alexandria, La. The meeting was organized by Dr. Barrett Stout, dean of the LSU music department, and piano instructor Polly Gibbs. At that time Stout was vice-president of state and regional organizations of the Music Teacher’s National Association (MTNA), which became the parent organization of the LMTA in 1953. That same year the LMTA held its first annual convention at LSU’s Music and Dramatic Arts Building. Stout served as president of the national organization from 1953-1954, and Polly Gibbs was president of the LMTA from 1954 to 1955.
The overarching goal of the LMTA was to raise the level of musical performance, understanding, teaching, and research throughout the state. To this end, LMTA cooperated with other professional music teacher organizations and developed a certification plan, which was established in 1965. Certification initially involved music students passing examinations in front of a panel of instructors, but eventually evolved into statewide District Rally that focused on four areas of testing: performance, sight-reading, keyboard musicianship, and music theory. The rally eventually included teacher certification in the areas of education, in-service, leadership, professional involvement, and public performance. The first rally syllabus was printed in 1971 and continues to be updated periodically.
The LMTA incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1975. The corporate structure consists of a president, three vice presidents, a secretary, a treasurer, and a historian, with chairpersons elected to the following committees: Executive, Piano, Voice, Orchestral Instruments, Sacred Music, Theory-Composition, LMTA Rally, MTNA College Auditions, MTNA High School Auditions, the Baldwin Junior Keyboard Achievement Awards, the Independent Music Teacher Forum, and the Certification Board.
In addition to fostering educational standards, LMTA provides members with a national professional network through its affiliation with MTNA. The MTNA publishes a scholarly journal (The American Music Teacher), distributes pedagogical materials, and coordinates with local chapters on national standards and group health insurance.
LMTA administrators primarily focus on organizing the seasonal and annual conventions and promoting other group activities and programs through newsletters and other media. LMTA is comprised of several localized chapters who operate independently and collaboratively. These include the Baton Rouge Music Teachers Association, Central Louisiana Piano Teachers Association, Greater Shreveport Music Teacher Association, Lafayette Area Music Teachers Association, Lake Charles Piano Teachers Association, Monroe District Music Teachers Association, New Orleans Music Teachers Association, North Shore Piano Teachers Association, and Ruston Area Music Teachers Association. From 2005 through 2007, the LMTA concentrated efforts on provide funding, equipment, and other support to schools, teachers, and students affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The Louisiana Music Teachers Association (LMTA) records consist of correspondence, published materials, subject files, membership documents, photographs, newsletters, guidebooks, minutes, reports, and other administrative records. The collection documents the evolving structure and activities of the LMTA over the last several decades. Sections of the records highlight the relationship between the LMTA and its parent organization the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), as well as aspects of the local groups within Louisiana that comprise state and regional organizations. Of note are the newsletters and convention documentation which spans the length of the organization’s history.
Also of note is a group of documents on relief efforts for LMTA members whose students and institutions were affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It includes extensive correspondence on the group’s fundraising programs Save Our Students (SOS) and For Teachers Only (FTO).
The collection is comprised of several accessions that were acquired separately from different LMTA officers. The container list describes the contents of each individual accession in the order that it was received. The original LMTA folder names and arrangement were retained wherever possible.
