S. Steve Carnegie was a contract civil engineer who worked on projects around southern Louisiana from the 1930s to the 1960s. Carnegie and his company, Carnegie & Smith, worked on projects for J. L. Voorhies, civil engineer for the City of Baton Rouge.
The S. Steve Carnegie papers consist of engineering files, correspondence, subject files, personnel files, and photographic materials which document civil engineering projects. The engineering files are arranged geographically and contain contracts, specifications, blueprints, reports, and other items documenting work on engineering and construction projects. These projects include sewerage and sanitation works, highway construction, subdivision plans, and parks and public facilities in southern Louisiana including the towns of Amite, Baldwin, Baton Rouge, Bogalusa, Crowley, Independence, Morgan City, Plaquemine, Port Allen, Rayne, St. Martinville, Slidell, Sulphur, and Vinton, Louisiana. Correspondence pertains to engineering projects and includes letters from suppliers. The collection also contains personnel files and files on subjects including pollution, testing, sewers, fencing, and filtration. Photographic materials consist of photographs, negatives, and 16mm motion picture films depicting engineering and construction work. In addition to engineering projects, some films depict flooding in Baton Rouge (1955 or 1958?), Hurricane Camille, posters of women, and footage of the 1948 Miss America pageant.
