George H. Carpenter (1849-1892), a dentist, resided with his family in Slaughter and Clinton, East Feliciana Parish, La.
Family papers of Dr. George H. Carpenter also contain papers and documents of his father-in-law, John Y. East of East Feliciana Parish, La. and the East family. Among these papers are family letters, including the John A. Collins family; legal and business papers of John East relating to land ownership and plantation economy; poetry principally written by members of the East and Carpenter families; sermons; biographical writings; and Louisiana Supreme Court briefs (undated).
Printed material consists of newspapers clippings; road maps; maps of Louisiana (1902) and Texas (1873); Colt historical prints; political handbills; Huey P. Long political broadsides (1930); children's books; several almanacs (1855-1918); books on religion; and several miscellaneous books including East Feliciana Louisiana Past and Present.
Among the manuscript volumes are scrapbooks relating to 20th century social and historical events in East Feliciana Parish; diaries; autograph albums; memorandum books of various family members; account book and poetry of Mary East (1857); and John W. Somerville's day book (1842-1866).
