BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

John G. Cale was born in 1922, and was a LSU Library assistant as well as a Ph.D. candidate in music history and literature, 1968. These are documents compiled from Cale's research on Henri Fourrier while studying for his Ph.D. in music history and literature. Research compiled here was presented at his Seminar in Music History class.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The papers consist of 97 thematic index cards of Cale's research for his seminar paper. The cards list titles of popular and sacred manuscript music found at the LSU Libraries and the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired.

Also included is a copy of the 10-page seminar paper, submitted March 31, 1966, by John G. Cale for Music 242, Seminar in Music History taught by Dr. Frederick B. Crane, titled, “Inventory of Henri and Joseph Amedee Fourrier Music Collection.” A notation, January 20, 1967, by Cale shows that Braille music and books are also at the Louisiana State School for the Blind (see index cards). Cover of the seminar paper reads “Fourrier Collection; Locations, Listings, Music Scores, Books. Music 241-242. John Cale.”

The papers also contain one newspaper clipping dated February 10, 1968, from the State Times Advocate of East Baton Rouge Parish, La., on the death of Joseph Daniel Lawrence Fourrier (1879-1968), a grandson of Henri Fourrier and a native of Brusly, West Baton Rouge Parish, La.

The entire collection is on microfilm.
