BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Lewis Guion, son of sugar planter George Seth Guion, attended the University of Virginia and practiced law in Thibodaux and New Orleans, Louisiana. He was an officer in the Confederate Army, serving in Company H of the 26th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. This regiment was organized in Terrebonne Parish as the Grivot Guards under Lieutenant Colonel Duncan S. Cage. After the Civil War, Guion established a sugar planting partnership with his brother-in-law, Francis T. Nicholls.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Volume 1, Record Book, CSA, Company H, 26th Regiment, 1862-1865

Official record book of Company H, 26th Louisiana Regiment, Confederate States Army, organized in Terrebonne Parish as the Grivot Guards under Duncan S. Cage, lieutenant colonel, contains Captain William A. Bisland’s morning reports and monthly remarks from April 1862 to July 1863 giving information concerning officers and soldiers at roll call, company movements and Federal activities, illnesses, deaths and discharges; record of clothing issued (1863-1865); individual accounts showing payments made and charges for clothing (ca. 1863-1865); a “descriptive list” of privates and non-commissioned officers giving physical description, place of birth, occupation, enlistment information, payments, bounty, and personal remarks (1863-1865); a list of 139 officers and soldiers giving information concerning rank and service record (1862-1865); a list of company members paroled at Vicksburg or left as prisoners of war (July 7, 1863); a list of discharges because of death, desertion or transfer (1862-1863); a list by regiment of men killed and wounded during siege of Vicksburg (May-June, 1863); 2 lists of ordinance stores (December 5, 1862 and January 12, 1863); copies of General M.L. Smith’s circular issued at Vicksburg commending soldiers for bravery (May 25, 1863), E. Kirby Smith’s special order #6, dated January 7, 1865, from Trans Mississippi Headquarters, Shreveport, and circular from Colonel R. Richardson, Camp Salubrity, near Natchitoches (May 2, 1865).

The notebook contains cash entries for payments made for such items as beef, medicine, toll bridge charges, mending carriages and for cash received for mules impressed, hire of wagon, rental of slaves, and sale of fodder (1859, undated).

The volume also contains school notes of Lewis Guion, Thibodeaux, Lafourche Parish, including law examination questions, probably from the University of Virginia (1859), and French language notes (undated).
