BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE
Samuel R. Latta was captain of the Macon Grays, Company B, 13th Tennessee Infantry, during the Civil War. He and his wife, Mary, had six children and lived in Dyersburg, Tennessee.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
Typescripts of an exchange of letters between Captain Samuel R. Latta and his wife, Mary, during his service in the Confederate States Army at Fort Wright, Tennessee; in southeastern Missouri; at Columbus, Kentucky; and at Corinth, Mississippi. Latta's letters describe his regiment's participation in the Battle of Belmont and the Battle of Shiloh. Also included are three letters from Latta’s brother living in Boston, Massachusetts, and two letters from a school teacher.
