BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE
Henry L. Garland (1866-1960) was born in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, La., to Julia Bullard Garland (b. 1833) and Henry L. Garland, Sr., (1826-1908), an attorney and politician of Opelousas. He was educated at Manhattan College in New York, practiced law in New Orleans for many years, and was best known for his revision of the Louisiana Code. After his retirement from the legal profession, he operated a book store in New Orleans.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
Professional records of Henry L. Garland, New Orleans lawyer and native of Opelousas, consisting of a legal case file of papers (1899-1901) concerning the case of Emmett T. Moody and Louis T. Heintz versus Zachariah Strain and Mrs. W. C. Heintz. Also found in the collection are typewritten abstracts of titles prepared from St. Tammany Parish Records and a typewritten index (1857-1895) to St. Tammany conveyance records, probably belonging to his father, Henry L. Garland, Sr.
The collection also includes a handwritten library index to Garland’s personal library and a handwritten library list arranged alphabetically under subject and/or author.
