J. Hugo Dore was judge of the First District of the First Circuit Court of Appeal of Louisiana, and a resident of Ville Platte, La. He was state senator for Avoyelles Parish, La., from 1928 to 1935. Dore also served on the Board of Supervisors for Louisiana State University, during the “Louisiana Scandals” of 1939 involving LSU President James Smith and Louisiana Governor Richard Leche.
Collection contains Dore’s judicial files as well as personal papers.
The judicial files consist of reviews, opinions, judgments, briefs, correspondence, dockets of cases, and other related records pertaining to causes and actions appealed from the district courts together with similar material submitted by Judge Sam A. LeBlanc (19301949) and Judge Morris A. Lottinger (1950-1965) of the Second District of the First Circuit and by Judge C. Ellis Ott (1936-1948) and Judge Robert S. Ellis Jr. (1949-1959) of the Third District of the First Circuit. These materials are organized by the name of the judge or judges serving the district and alphabetically thereunder by name of the plaintiff in the case.
Personal papers include incoming and outgoing correspondence concerning personal business and some family matters, copies of letters of condolence and congratulations, and some requests for assistance on behalf of friends and constituents, 1939-1950; copies of minutes of the LSU Board of Supervisors, correspondence, and testimony primarily related to the “Louisiana Scandals,” 1938-1944; lists of gubernatorial vote by parish, Louisiana senators and representatives elected, and Dore’s letters to those elected; and newspapers including the 1948 acts of the Louisiana legislature and 1949 appointments by the Evangeline Parish School Board.
