Charles Andrew Johnson, a native of New Haven, Connecticut, was a lawyer in New Orleans, Louisiana. He served as judge for the 2nd Judicial District at Donaldsonville in 1843, and in 1855, began a partnership with Henry Denis in the New Orleans firm Johnson, Denis, Berault and Legendre. Johnson died in New Orleans in 1896.
The collection contains passports (in French, English, and Spanish) of Sidney L. Johnson (1832-1833, 1841) and Charles Andrew Johnson (1865); letters in French from Michael Thomassin Andry, a Louisiana planter, to Charles A. Johnson discussing personal and business affairs (1858); letters from Thomas S. Burbank concerning money owed to Andry (1861); military passes (1863-1864); a receipt for bonds from the Confederate States Depositary’s Office (1864); and a number of bank checks (1866-1869).
Two letters and a newspaper clipping (1873) relate to lawsuits of Charles A. Johnson. Repair estimates and plans of architects Charles Lewis Hillger and William Fitzner concern the restoration of the "Seamen's Home" on New Levee Street and the repair of buildings formerly occupied by the Fairbanks and Gilman Sugar Refinery in New Orleans (1876). Also included are account sheets; bills for merchandise; rent receipts; checks drawn from the Bank of America; a broadside of the New York, Havana & Mexican Mail Steamship Line (1875); and a broadside of the resolutions passed by the Bar of New Orleans at the death of Edward Anthony Bradford (1870). Also included are a number of documents from the New Orleans gentleman’s club, the Boston Club, such as Charles Johnson’s notification of membership (1885), a wine list; various circular letters; checks written for annual subscription (1885-1887); and balance sheets (1889-1891). Also included is a photograph of Charles A. Johnson (undated) and funeral announcements following Johnson’s death (February 4, 1896). Finally, a notebook containing genealogical notes, newspaper clippings, and ancestral tables is found in the collection (1889).
