E.W. Kerr was assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Texas A&M College (1896-1902), instructor in machine design at Purdue University (1902-1905), professor of mechanical engineering at Louisiana State University (1905-1916), an efficiency engineer for the Cuba Cane Sugar Corporation of Havana, Cuba (1916-1931), and a consultant to Southwest Louisiana sugar factories (1935-1949).
Correspondence, technical data and notes, blueprints and related printed items for the Cuba Cane Sugar Corporation and for sugar factories in southwest Louisiana constitute the bulk of the papers. The collection also includes family letters, personal correspondence relating to business matters, and printed material including articles from technical periodicals and issues of Transactions of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering.
The collection is divided into family and personal correspondence relating to business matters (1913-1951), correspondence and related items for Cuba Cane Sugar Corporation (1916-1931), and correspondence and related items for clients (1935-1949) arranged alphabetically. Technical data and blueprints are also grouped together at the end of the collection.
