Biographical/Historical Note
Léona Queyrouze Barel (1861?-1938) was a French language writer, poet, essayist and musician of New Orleans and New York City. She also wrote under the name “Constant Beauvais.” In 1901, she married Pierre Marie Etienne Barel, a fellow New Orleans Creole. Her father, Major Léon Queyrouze, was the commander of the Orleans Guard Battalion during the Civil War and a member of the New Orleans factors' firm, Queyrouze and Bois. Her brother J. Maxime was an attorney. The Queyrouze family was associated with prominent New Orleans Creoles and L'Athenée Louisianais, an organization engaged in the perpetuation and encouragement of the French language in Louisiana.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists principally of letters to Léona Queyrouze from other authors and editors, including Anatole Cousin (1882-1889), Maria Giovanni Callegari (1887-1888), Charles Testut (1887), George Duysters (1892-1894), Dr. Alfred Mercier (1888), Charles Gayarre, and Mollie Moore Davis, New Orleans novelist who translated many of the poems of Léona Queyrouze. Correspondence with James Redpath (1889-1890), managing editor of North American Review and staff member of Bedford Magazine, New York City, concerns the publication of some of her writings and their differences in opinion over the relative merits of General Beauregard and Jefferson Davis. A large number of letters and related items were received from L. Placide Canonge (1886-1893), Louisiana journalist, dramatist, state legislator, and editor of the newspaper L’Abeille de la Nouvelle Orleans and the political and literary L’Epoque.
Copies of her literary writings and musical compositions are also found, including the poems "Desire," "Regret," and "Medea," the play Silhouettes Creoles, and her musical composition Fantasie Indienne, which was performed by the Mexican Army Band at the World’s Exposition in 1884. Also included are her lecture "De L'Indulgence," and her book Idyl, My Personal Reminiscences of Lafcadio Hearn, published in Japan in 1933 in which she relates her friendship with Hearn. The collection also includes items reflecting her sympathy with the Anti-Lottery League and her involvement in L'Athenée Louisianais, such as a number of poems and essays published in Comptes Rendus de L’Athenée Louisianais.
Her father's business and personal papers consist of family and land documents, letters, bills, and receipts. Military papers include reports and orders of the Orleans Guards. Papers of J. Maxime Queyrouze relate to his law career. Box 11 of the collection is devoted to the Court Case of Etienne Deschamps and contains correspondence, documents, and newspaper clippings pertaining to the case. Léona Queyrouze pleaded for leniency for Deschamps, a New Orleans doctor on trial for killing a young girl in 1889. His attorney was Maxime Queyrouze.
