John Kemp lived in Washington Parish, Louisiana.
The earliest item in the collection is a true copy of a receipt for a debt mentioning Thomas Maddan of South Carolina from April 27, 1794 (1806). Most items that follow include receipts and bills for merchandise bought in Covington from William Bagley, E.M. Terrell, and E.H. Hornsby by Phillip Turner, Peter B. Packet, and M. Hollenback (1828-1829). Receipts, bills, and account sheets of Mary Turner (1835-1836), as well as a deed for property in Washington Parish to Mary Turner from William Roberts (1835) are also included. A letter to Mrs. Lucia Ann Dow in Wakefield, New Hampshire, from her brother Rufus comes from the Isle of Gorce in Africa and discusses his recovering health and the role he has played in the war there between the English and Mandingoes (May 8, 1832).
Later papers include bills of James Roberts to Mrs. Mary Kemp for merchandise (1850-1851), a notarized statement concerning the transfer of land to Levy Bankston from his brother (1851), a letter to Dr. Roberts concerning the publication of a book (1857), and a letter from John T. Kemp to Egerton & Brothers concerning lottery tickets (1855). A bill from Magee & Brewer to Mary Kemp lists merchandise (1857) as does a bill for John Kemp to James Roberts (undated). Two tax receipts for M. S. Newsom and a receipt for payment by James Lea Shaw to Isaac Kemp (1860) are included, as is an itemized receipt of J. H. Kemp for Confederate taxes (1864).
