Holmes Hutchinson of Utica, New York, was a tutor for Franklin A. Hudson, son of Silas F. Hudson. Hutchinson travelled annually to the Hudson's sugar plantation at Bayou Goula, Louisiana, to teach young Franklin. In 1855 Hutchinson purchased some cypress swampland in Iberville Parish with John H. Randolph.
Letters, 1885-1904, from M. L. Randolph of Blythewood Plantation, Iberville Parish, to Hutchinson's wife and daughter (Mrs. F. H. Lintner) concern the management of, taxes paid on, and revenue received from the cypress swampland. A stock certificate issued in 1829 by the Fort-Plain Bridge Company to Holmes Hutchinson and transferred in 1847 to Charles Hutchinson is present. Hutchinson's cash expenses for trips, 1844-1851, made from Utica to Bayou Goula and return are recorded in the account book, as are expenses for trips made to Washington, D. C., and St. Louis, Missouri. Information regarding the estate of Silas F. Hudson, the Oswego and Syracuse Railroad, and accounts with Franklin A. Hudson and Robert Sewall is also available in the account book.
