Biographical/Historical Note
The Feliciana Female Collegiate Institute was located in Jackson, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, 1867-1877. It was moved to Afton Villa, West Feliciana Parish, and operated there 1877-1884; it was moved back to Jackson in 1884. The Institute was directed by Mrs. Rufus K. Howell, nee Virginia Z. Catlett, and was eventually absorbed into the Louisiana public school system.
Scope and Content Note
Four record books (1867-1881) include accounts with students, copies of receipts for salaries of teachers, and attendance and department records of students. One record book (1880-1888) contains the school's accounts with a merchandising business, J. Freyhan and Company of Bayou Sara, West Feliciana Parish. Records of events at Afton Villa, some recipes, and poems (1887) are entered in a criminal docket book which contains a few criminal court entries for 1851.
Printed volumes include an annual report of the state superintendent of public schools (1874) and a catalog of the Feliciana Female Collegiate Institute (1893).
