BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Washington L. and Sion R. Simmons lived in Bolivar County, Mississippi. Washington Simmons served in the Confederate States Army. He was captured in 1862 and held as a federal prisoner in Helena, Arkansas.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Papers consist of a photostatic copy of tax receipt of S. R. Simmons for the year of 1838 for $266.60, signed by W. H. Starke, sheriff and tax collector of Bolivar County, Miss. (Mar. 10, 1839); a quotation from a letter of W. La Fayette Simmons, describing the location of Concordia, Miss., and Bolivar County [Miss.] (Mar. 18, 1861); and a photostatic copy of letter from W. La Fayette Simmons, Helena, Ark., to Charles White in Chelsea, Mass., telling of his marriage to White's daughter, Mary, and his inability to visit or write to the bride's parents and announce the marriage due to the disruption of communication between the North and South. Simmons was held prisoner by Union forces in Helena, Ark., and had asked his wife to go to the home of his brother-in-law, Ben May in Grenada, Miss., and await his discharge. Simmons expresses his hope that the South might gain its autonomy (Sept. 6, 1862). Also included is a photostatic copy of a map showing the location of a plantation in Bolivar County, Miss. (undated).
