BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

George S. Owen was a postmaster, commission agent, steamboat agent, and general store owner at Pilcher's Point, East Carroll Parish, Louisiana. Shapley Owen was a planter of Owenton Plantation, Bunch's Bend, East Carroll Parish.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of a scrapbook (1857-1865); ledgers (1860-1888); daybooks (1874-1897); an invoice book (1878-1881); cash books (1879-1889); cotton record books (1880-1902); a general record book (1881-1882); volumes containing bills of lading (1881-1888); and journals (1890-1906). The volumes relate primarily to George Owen's management of the general store at Pilcher's Point but include some records kept by Shapley Owen which pertain to his activities as a planter of Owenton Plantation.
